i like that you can go to the Wiltern and buy tickets before the night of a show without hassling with ticketmaster charges. Does anyone know what other GV venues do this?

a lot of them do, unless it's sold out.

actually they all do, but only on the night of the show. but i'm asking about advance sales. Troubadour does it via Fax (however antiquated that is, it still works) and Sea Level and Aron's (both R.I.P.) used to do it for shows sold through Ticketweb (Echo, Spaceland, etc). House of Blues and Wiltern you can walk up whenever the ticket window is open and get tickets with a much more reasonable service fee than tm.com.

The Greek Theater does this too.

many venues make it impossible to get tickets outside of Ticketmaster.

off the top of my head;
Fonda
El Rey
Wiltern
Avalon

Of course, you can buy em day of show though.

You can buy Wiltern show tickets at their box office whenever they have a show going on. The other thing I dislike is that the El Rey and Fonda took away the option of regular mail and will ONLY FedEx or Ticketfast your tix if you buy online (or WillCall).

Some venues still charge a service fee when you buy from them. The Roxy is the worst.

Not only that, but they sometimes require a drink ticket. that increases it by 2 to 4 dollars.

The Roxy tickets always say "2 drink minimum", but i don't think i've ever actually bought any drinks there. is this when you buy at the window? last show I saw there was a free Cake show when they released the last album.

By the way, the knitting factory's got this new "txt tix" thing going on where you buy tickets via your cellphone's txt messaging service. the advertisements state you save 4 dollars on each order. I havent done it yet, but probably will given the chance.

Also, it's not often, but sometimes bands will use services like ticketweb.com or ducatking.com, which have virtually no service fees (and shipping is either free or cheap)

I like ticketweb for the lower service fees, but i will never again use ducatking. Yeah, the lower fees are cool, but the customer service is horrible. my tickets were lost TWICE (Alkaline Trio and again for My Chemical Romance, never received in the mail). i ended up getting in to one of the shows via a guest list, but got ZERO help from their customer service (read the fine print, they will NOT help you unless you use the more expensive FedEx option).

Really? That's odd, because I've had issues twice with them also (both were my own fault) and I got super-fucking-fast customer service replies. I even talked to them on the phone, and they were very nice. Basically, my tickets got lost in the mail due to me giving a bad address, and they transfered the tickets to willcall. Didn't have any problems.

my issues were at least 2-3 years back, possibly when they first started out (?) so maybe they've gotten better. i've already eaten my words because i grabbed some on the SOMA presale for the Thrice-Brand New show. crossing my fingers now.

Nothing but positive experiences with Ducat King. I really hope GV uses them for Coachella again next year.

You might have to take (Music Box/Henry) Fonda off your list now. I haven't tried it, but I just got word that they have advance ticket sales at their box office, going on from Monday thru Friday, 10am - 5pm. It supposedly started November 6. :D

That would be awesome! Fonda has some great shows coming up. I'll have to buy my Ghostland Observatory tix on my next day off (since I doubt I would make it there by 5 otherwise).

If anyone is going to a show there soon, can you as at the box office about buying tix for future events after 5pm? might be too hectic at the window with Will Call + Cash Sales + selling tix for other shows, but if the dorks at House of Blues can handle it, i'm sure the Fonda can!

That sounds pretty cool. I would like to try that.

Wow, that's horrible. I have never had any problems with either Ticketweb or Ducatking. I especially like Ticketweb and tend to get tickets really quickly when I order with them.

you know that ticketweb is owned by ticketmaster right?

Courtney
11-18-2007, 07:13 PM
I guess it doesn't really matter if they own it, EXCEPT if they push all competition out of the market and then as eudaemonia says raise all fees to Ticketmaster level, including on Ticketweb. Then I wouldn't be a happy camper.

it matters in the end ... eventually they'll own all ticketing companies and by that time they'll raise all prices and we'll all be screwed.
