Sometimes you have to take a break from the long hours at work and make your way down the street for a free show. Looking around the office (prepping for the show we would be filming a few days later, I decided to take my dinner break and make my way down Sunset Blvd (a whole 4 blocks) to Amoeba Records to see The Super Furry Animals (sans 3 members and acoustic).

On my short journey I was able to see one crazy person throw a bottle at a car on Vine. The bottle bounced off and shattered in the street, also outside of the Arclight was a guy with a Jason mask on, with a hoddie, talking on a cell phone. You know you have lived in Hollywood way too long when none of this is uncommon anymore.

I made it inside a few minutes after 7 and the two members were still sound checking. They left the stage and the announcement was made, SFA will be on shortly, please stick around if you want to see them.

I will say it was pretty empty for a free show at Amoeba, not like last week at that terrible rock reggae band Vampire Weekends free show where even the back isles were littered by greasy haired sceensters. Tonight I was able to walk to the very front to catch this show up close.

It was about 7:10 when the two members came out. They decided to take requests, reminding people it was acoustic. Song after song were shouted out to them and they kept saying they couldn’t play this or that song because there was only two of them, so they busted out into some new grooves from their new album "Hey Venus".

This wasn’t really a planned set (there was no set list), they just were doing whatever they wanted. And what they wanted was to be drinking beer while on stage. They even quipped “Ya see if you have a sticker it means you can drink beer inside”. I wish I would have had a sticker, or a beer for that matter.

“We are going to play a song about something, what do you want us to sing about?”

Someone yelled grapes.

We got a song about grapes being good, grapes being green and grapes being sweet.

We also got a song with a scissors solo (the scissors were given to them from the girl filming the show for the Amoeba website. There is nothing like a Scissors solo in a song to really make you take note of what can happen at a free show.

There were other interesting moments like when the band asked everyone to basically make reindeer antlers with their hands and wave their fingers around. Yeah it is LA but everyone there was participating.

Extended dinner breaks and free shows, what a way to spend an hour of your Thursday while getting paid to be working. Fantastic!
