Proof of how much my job sucks…

Friday, November 21st, 2008

So last week I spent an entire day at JPL (the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory) and the Pasadena Art Center with the infamous Phil Blaine. We were there as a part of an information share about the convergence of science and art.  Some of these ideas have ended up at Coachella.

The art center was pretty amazing. We took a brief tour of the facility and spent a few minutes exploring a couple art installations that were created by Dan Goods the JPL/NASA Creative Art Director and David Delgado from the Mars Rover research team.  Using math, science and a bit of creative genius, they mapped out a 3 dimensional clock that is truly larger than life.  From a distance, wires, wooden spheres and the use of lighting give the illusion of a perfectly shaped clock approximately 15feet in diameter.  As you walk closer into the room, you become part of the installation. The clock disappears.  You can experiment with sound by recording your voice through digital processors that make loops using delay and lots of other great effects.

OK…Visiting JPL was one of the most profound experiences that I’ve had in a long time (thanks for the invite Phil). Mars rovers, rocket engines, giant clean room laboratories resembling scenes from a James Bond flick, lunar modules, 3D panoramic images of the surface of mars over 10ft long…I can go on and on.  Check out some pics

Switching gears a bit, Club Nokia opened with Beck and Jenny Lewis on Nov 9th.
I didn’t really know what to expect…Dalyn did such an awesome job designing the interior!  Sound is great too.  I’ll be there for InFlames this weekend (gotta have my monthly metal fix!).  If any of you have been to the club yet, please share stories, pictures, comments…etc

It’s been a busy couple weeks…Stagecoach also went on-sale.  Yeehaw!!!  Anyone try the BBQ this year…???  Oh man.

Hot Little Pony (aka Far)

Growing up in Northern California and being a bit younger then most of my friends, I only caught the tail end of the Sacramento scene.  Seeing the Deftones when I was 14 truly changed my life (nov 3, 1998 Petaluma CA - Phoenix Theatre).

I was a minute late with Far.  I picked up Tin Cans right after the band broke up in ‘99.  I have not been to a show in such a long time where the vibe was so amazing.  No egos. No drama.  Everyone was there to see this band they loved and missed.

I’ve seen Onelinedrawing a handful of times, but there’s no comparison…sorry Jonah.  Aside from Coachella, Far @ Glasshouse was the highlight of my year.  Can’t wait for them to come back after the UK tour.

On another note, getting really excited for Girl Talk this weekend @ Fonda…saw him at All Points West and the set blew me away…5.5 more hours people.

Check this out - Far at the Glasshouse

MBV / Detour / Rancid

Monday, October 6th, 2008

So we just heard about this blogging thing so we thought we’d give it a try.

First up:
My Bloody Valentine - Santa Monica Civic aka MBV@SMC. This is the 3rd time I’ve seen them on this tour. The volume was bone crushing even before they got to “you made me realize”, even louder than the Roxy and Palace shows in ‘92.  Seems like new speaker technology has made things so much clearer.  spoke to Kevin for a bit, haven’t seen him since last year,  great to see that they were even better now.

Had a blast at Detour, loved Buraka Som Sistema (looks like they’ll play Coachella which is confirmed for April 17, 18 & 19), Presets and others were great also, more on that later..

Stopped by Rancid for the last of six nights, love anything Tim Armstrong does.
Wished I could have promoted an Op-Ivy show when they were around…..
